Special Education Needs & Disability
Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities receive effective help and support. Staff plan exactly what pupils need to learn next.
Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND)
Inclusion is an important part of life at Bracken Leas Primary School. All children have particular needs at some time. We aim for all children to be provided with the teaching and experiences appropriate for those needs.
A special educational need may be an explanation for delayed or slower progress and we make every effort to narrow the gap in attainment. We want each child to make progress to the best of their ability. Parents can help us by letting us know of anything, changes in family circumstances, prolonged working away from home etc. which may prevent a child from achieving his/her maximum potential. We operate our Special Needs and Inclusion Policy in line with the National Code of Practice.
A special need may be a long-term need or just a temporary difficulty. If a child is not progressing as well as the other members of a class or is an outstandingly high achiever, that child will have some special attention paid to him/her to ascertain what needs to be done to make progress or provide a challenge. This will be in a six-week cycle, with smart targets, which will be assessed at the end of the cycle. This assessment will inform the teacher of their next steps.
We do have members of staff designated to help children with special needs and at an early stage we shall advise you if we feel your child requires extra help from school or any other sources. When it is considered that a child has a specific need for other intervention, our school is able to access to other support agencies. When these agencies are involved, consultation always takes place with the parents first.
All children with additional needs are valued members of our school community. We believe that the journey through school life should be enjoyable, memorable and valuable for all. Pupils with special educational needs (SEND), along with all pupils, have the entitlement to access a broad and balanced curriculum.
At Bracken Leas Primary School, every teacher is a teacher of every child including those with SEND.
